Dear Supporters and Well-Wishers,
As we look back on the last 16 years, the story of Golden Avatar Gurukula stands as a testament to how far sincere service, unity, and blessings can carry a small dream. What began as a seed of desire in the heart of Srila Gurudeva, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayana Goswami Maharaj has now blossomed into a thriving sanctuary of education, devotion, and growth.
The very first steps of the Gurukula were taken by two siblings, Dalia and Subal Sakha Das (Banti), who are now the foundation of Golden Avatar Gurukula. With nothing but deep faith and determination, they began holding classes inside their own home. A handful of children sat on simple mats, learning with joy and receiving care from these two young devotees.
As the number of students grew, a small rented space became the next classroom. And eventually, the Gurukula was able to move into its first hut.
But love has a way of attracting growth. Before long, two devoted supporters joined us in this devotional journey — Shyam and Damayanti, who are now the pillars and roof of Golden Avatar Gurukula, both providing structure and safety to the little lives growing under this sanctuary.
With time, the Gurukula shifted to a new place. At first it was a barren field, overgrown with wild thorny plants and home to snakes. But to them, it was a blank canvas filled with possibilities. Clearing the land took tremendous effort — countless hours under the sun, removing weeds, leveling the soil, and preparing a space where the children could learn without fear.
After the land was cleared, the first structure to rise was a Mandapam — open, humble, and filled with purpose. It serves as the classroom, the kīrtan (devotional music) hall, the study space, and the prasadam (blessed vegetarian food) area.
Over time, the Mandapam was strengthened with walls and windows, protecting the children during the monsoon and winter seasons.
A beautiful Thakurji altar was added, making spiritual life the heart of the Gurukula. Book shelves, classrooms, a library, and teaching areas were arranged with care.
A kitchen was built to prepare prasadam for the children. Before this, meals had to be cooked outside, under the sun. The bathroom was rebuilt and made strong.
Perhaps the most visible transformation has been the land itself. Where there was once only dry earth and thorny weeds, there is now a flourishing Tulasi garden, rows of vegetables and crops, fruit trees growing strong and bright flowers opening each morning. The children now run and play freely in their own playground, something that once seemed impossible.
A vital part of the Gurukula’s growth has been the heartfelt guidance of our two revered spiritual masters.
Srila Tridandi Maharaj has played an essential role in nourishing the children’s spiritual foundations. Through his teachings of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Jaiva Dharma, and the life histories of great personalities in our Guru-paramparā, he has opened doors of understanding that deepen faith and illuminate the path of devotion. His classes on scriptures, philosophy, and Vaishnava culture have shaped the minds and hearts of the students, helping them form a strong grounding in spiritual knowledge.
Srila Mahavir Maharaj, with his warmth and devotion, has touched the lives of the children and families in a unique way. He taught the children how to perform bhoga-ārati, how to sing kirtan melodies with proper harmonium tunes, and most importantly, he gifts the community with unforgettable Harikatha (spiritual discourses about Lord Krishna and His associates). Every time he visits Nabadwip, grandparents, parents, and children would gather — finding joy, solace, and inspiration in his words. His birthday celebrations, marked by Nagar Sankirtans (a devotional practice involving public, processional chanting of holy names through the streets) with all the families, created cherished memories that makes the chanting of the Holy Names something everyone looks forward to.
Together, both Maharajas have shaped the spirit of Golden Avatar Gurukula — one strengthening knowledge, the other enriching devotion — each playing an equal and irreplaceable role in nurturing this sacred community.
16 years ago, Golden Avatar Gurukula was nothing more than a prayer in the heart of Srila Gurudeva.
Today, it is a living, breathing community where children receive education, where the elderly and mothers receive health education, where devotional culture is nurtured, and where there are opportunities to socialise in a devotional community.
This journey has been possible only because of the love, support, and blessings from all of you.
From barren land to a flourishing sanctuary…
From a small hut to a vibrant Gurukula…
This is the blessing of Srila Gurudeva.
Thank you for being part of this family, this mission, and this devotional journey.
